Directions: We ask each school or college to identify three to five assessment activities, results of which contributed produced a change in degree programs, teaching methods or pedagogy. The AQ team suggests that the units AAC and/or faculty generate a list of recommendations, and then agree on 3-5 to present. Once the assessment activities have been identified, we ask the Dean/Ex. Director to identify activities that are outstanding examples of using assessment to improve academic quality. Please provide the list of 3-5 in the table below. An example is provided for your assistance. ASSESSMENT ACTIVITYPROGRAM SUMMARY OF OUTCOMES AND CHANGES1.AssessmentComposition ProgramThree sections of EN100Fall 2007: Pre-test and Post-test using a multiple-choice editing test. This test is an objective but indirect measure of the ability to identify errors in writing and make choices among possible edits/revisions. DEALStudents in EN100 posted small but statistically significant gains on the test. An item analysis indicated that students tended to improve more in awareness of discrete grammatical constructs like subject-verb agreement and verb tense consistency than on either diction or on more subtle cohesive constructs like parallel structure and avoidance of dangling and misplaced modifiers. These results suggest, for instruction, more focus on vocabulary building and sentence-level rhetoric. Partly in reaction to these findings, at least one EN 100 instructor has changed the course textbook to one that approaches grammar instruction through the logical and elegant building of sentences. Discussion is ongoing about changes in instructional method, text adoption, and others results of this assessment study. 2. Assessment: Composition Program: Fall 2007 EN111-07: Writing for Research & Spring 2008 EN111-07: Writing for Research DEAL This assessment project measures student improvement in writing strong introductions, thesis statements, and conclusions for academic essays. All three aspects of good essay writing were scored for all six major essays submitted during the semester (including the Research Papers preliminary and final draft). The results reveal that students improved their ability to write strong introductions, insightful thesis statements, and cogent conclusions, although this improvement was not as dramatic as it could have been. The instructor has changed his pedagogical plan to emphasize these skills by adding additional in-class work involving introductions, thesis statements, and conclusions, as well as enhanced peer-review sessions that review these skills. 4. 5.
