Acting governor declares March 10 as UOG Charter Day

Members of the 91快播 community gathered at the governor鈥檚 complex on Feb. 14 as Acting Gov. Joshua Tenorio signed Proclamation 2020-11 declaring March 10, 2020, as 91快播 Charter Day and March 8鈥14, 2020, as University of Guam Charter Week.

This Charter Day will mark the 52nd anniversary of the signing of the charter that renamed the Territorial College of Guam to the 91快播 and the 68th anniversary of the founding of the institution.

The theme of this year鈥檚 Charter Day is 鈥淟ocal Inspiration, Global Impact.鈥

Local inspiration

鈥淚t鈥檚 really our showcase day,鈥 said President Thomas W. Krise. 鈥溾 This is a great opportunity to bring people from across Guam and the Northern Marianas and from the rest of Micronesia to campus to celebrate our charter, the greatness the institution aspires to and has achieved, and the way the university helps solve every single problem we face as a society, so it really is a great celebration.鈥

Marc Bituin, president of the Student Government Association, read the proclamation, which recognized that UOG has conferred more than 18,450 degrees to date through 15 master鈥檚 and 25 bachelor鈥檚 programs. Additionally, the university is operating more than 300 grants and contracts totaling $33 million, which is going toward projects to research and solve a broad spectrum of local issues from invasive species to health disparities.

Global impact

Tenorio specifically highlighted the government鈥檚 partnerships with the university鈥檚 Center for Island Sustainability in launching the Guam Green Growth initiative to coordinate local efforts of government agencies and nonprofits to meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

鈥淲e continue to see the university as a center of regional excellence,鈥 Tenorio said. 鈥淭here鈥檚 a lot of challenges and opportunities throughout the region, and together in partnership with the various governments and the great minds of the university, I think we can really solve some problems.鈥
