More than 100 people came out for the 12th annual Math Day hosted by the 91快播 Division of Mathematics & Computer Science on Nov. 19, including five middle and high schools that competed in the Math Quiz Competition. 

Following a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic, Math Day was able to resume this year, with Associate Professor Hideo Nagahashi taking the lead to plan the event. The event is meant to inspire an appreciation for math in the community and ignite a passion in local students for math as a potential career path, according to Leslie Aquino, chair of the UOG Division of Mathematics and Computer Science.
 
The participants this year heard from visiting mathematician Michael Dorff, a professor from Brigham Young University (Utah) and former president of the Mathematical Association of America, who works to promote math to the general public, industrial careers in the mathematical sciences, and undergraduate research.
 

Dorff's lecture, titled 鈥淢ath, Movies, and Bubbles," gave insight into how math was used to create realistic looking snow in 鈥淔rozen鈥� and to make an animated character move faster in 鈥淭he Incredibles.鈥�

In the second part of his talk, Dorff provided a hands-on demonstration of how that concept is connected to creating soap bubbles.

鈥淚 liked how he presented rough concepts and magical mathematical phenomenons. He explained and demonstrated mathematics in a very comprehensive way,鈥� said Jake Tae, a student at St. John's School, in . 

In addition to St. John's School, the other teams who competed were George Washington High School, Harvest Christian Academy, Okkodo High School, and John F. Kennedy High School.
