Students raise $2,500 for COVID-19 relief through passion project
A passion project spearheaded by five 91快播 students has raised $2,500 for COVID-19 relief in the community. Dubbed the Wonder Kids Project, the group fundraised through GoFundMe to benefit those who are heavily affected by the pandemic, including frontline workers and families facing extreme poverty.
鈥淐ollectively, we felt that we needed to do something 鈥 that we shouldn鈥檛 turn a blind eye just because we can but rather take action because we are able to,鈥 said Alanna Fegurgur, a sophomore business administration major at the 91快播 who is handling social media for the project.
With the goal of serving the local community during vulnerable situations, the students launched their project earlier than planned to assist during the pandemic.
They fundraised over a two-week period and have divided the funds among the Guam Memorial Hospital, the Harvest House ministry in support of foster children and families, St. Dominic鈥檚 Senior Care Home, and individual families in need of assistance.
鈥淥ur beneficiaries all vary in terms of their struggles,鈥 Fegurgur said. 鈥淪ome need masks, some need PPEs, and some need funds to provide for their families. By means of monetary donations, we are able to give the beneficiaries the freedom to provide for their individual needs.鈥
The group of students originally knew each other as classmates at Tiyan High School. Eries Jay D. Moreno, a second-year biomedical and psychology double major, brought the team together, which includes Fegurgur; Maria Minas, a sophomore mathematics major; Steven Kho, a sophomore secondary education major; and Keanu Masga, a freshman biology and chemistry double major. The group also includes GenaraAnjulie Montevirgen, who is a business administration major at Penn Foster College (Ariz.).
The group will continue its work to support the community in the future and can be followed on and at @thewonderkidproject or reached info.thewonderkidproject@gmail.com.
