A bright new mural outside the Calvo Field House on the 91快播 campus was revealed at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Nov. 8, bringing a spirited start to the 91快播鈥檚 70th Anniversary Platinum Jubilee in 2022.

The one-of-a-kind design is the work of Austin Domingo, a 2012 graduate of the UOG .

鈥淚 was very excited to take part in this project,鈥 Domingo said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 the University of Guam 鈥 a place that has meaning to me. It鈥檚 where I started my art career.鈥

Domingo started painting murals five years ago and is now a full-time artist, sought-after for his bright, intricate pieces. His art has infused life and cultural pride to public walls, corporate buildings, bus stops, food trucks, and even shipping containers.

Portrayal of UOG鈥檚 steadfast spirit

For the UOG mural, Domingo combined his distinct style of local imagery, patterns based on nature, and bold colors with the steadfast spirit of the University and the island into a typographical illustration of the letters U-O-G.

The 鈥淯鈥 displays the trident of Triton 鈥 the University mascot 鈥 and a kulo鈥 (CHamoru for 鈥渢rumpet shell鈥) with elements of the UOG Seal inside.

The 鈥淥鈥 depicts a sea turtle 鈥 representing wisdom, perseverance, and guidance 鈥 decorated with imagery prominent in Guam, including the sun, a latte stone, leaves, woven patterns, and bougainvillea.

The 鈥淕鈥 portrays a carabao with a mermaid body 鈥 an interpretation of the seahorses that pull the mythical sea god Poseidon鈥檚 chariot. Its tail forms a fishhook, paying homage to the University鈥檚 鈥淏ig G鈥 logo.

The piece was commissioned with support from the Guam Council on the Arts & Humanities Agency, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Office of the Governor of Guam.

Sandy Flores, director of Guam CAHA, expressed the importance of supporting and including local art throughout the community.

鈥淲hen you support art in a difficult time [鈥 you can step back and get away from the weight of the day and see what鈥檚 beautiful and our vision for the future,鈥 she said.

Established as the Territorial College of Guam in 1952, the 91快播 will celebrate its 70th anniversary throughout 2022 with the theme 鈥淭ransforming Lives, Advancing Communities.鈥

鈥淎ustin has done magnificent work on the mural. We鈥檙e very pleased to have this as one of the key things to kick off the anniversary year,鈥 said UOG President Thomas W. Krise.

The mural artwork is also featured on commemorative T-shirts available now at the in the Student Center on campus. View more of Domingo鈥檚 art on his Instagram page @.
