UOG SNAG brings joy to St. Dominic's Senior Care Home
With pandemic restrictions having limited visitors and social interactions for the
residents St. Dominic鈥檚 Senior Care Home in Guam for some time, the wanted to bring them an uplifting experience of socially distanced mingling and Christmas
carols as soon as COVID cases were on the decline.
鈥淎lthough COVID-19 still exists, we can鈥檛 forget about the needs, illnesses, and conditions
that are still ongoing in our community,鈥 said senior nursing major Angel Saunders,
president of UOG SNAG. 鈥淭he residents at St. Dominic鈥檚 truly enjoyed it. The nurses
reported that the non-verbal residents continued to hum the songs after we left. It
was a wonderful and joyful experience.鈥
The student chapter's effort to serve their community earned them a Breakthrough to Nursing Award from the National Student Nurses鈥 Association. The awards program aims to encourage nursing students nationwide to participate in service projects in their schools and communities.
The UOG chapter won $100 and will also be recognized at the NSNA Annual Convention
this April in Salt Lake City.
鈥淚鈥檓 so proud of all of these students. I know they warmed the hearts of our elders
at St. Dominic's,鈥 said Margaret Hattori-Uchima, dean of the UOG School of Health.
鈥淜udos to Ms. Vicky Alave and Ms. Antoinette Kleiner, the faculty advisors who ensured
the event was conducted in a safe manner due to the pandemic and who have been with
the students through all their community outreach work.鈥
