UOG STEM Conference to promote student research and cultivate future scientists

High school and college students as well as community members interested in the STEM fields are invited to attend the 3rd annual 91快播 CNAS STEM Conference. This year鈥檚 conference, themed 鈥淔rom Roots to Reef: Connecting Experiences in STEM,鈥� will be held in person for the first time from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, April 7鈥�8, at the Calvo Field House on the UOG campus.
Led and organized by students majoring in STEM fields under the UOG College of Natural and Applied Sciences and School of Engineering, the conference will 1) showcase the research projects of Guam students, 2) delve into current local and global matters in science, and 3) showcase STEM learning opportunities available to students.
鈥淭his event is meant to give students a platform to share their research experiences with our island community and to inspire upcoming students to pursue majors and eventual careers in STEM,鈥� said Britney Sison, a senior chemistry major on the conference planning committee.
The event will include presentations from various professionals, student research presentations, and expo booths. Delivering the keynote speeches will be Ernesto Guades, an assistant professor of civil engineering at UOG, who will discuss the sustainability of Guam鈥檚 civil infrastructure; and Else Demeulenaere, associate director of the UOG Center for Island Sustainability. Demeulenaere will discuss "Connecting land, ocean, and people through biocultural research approaches."
Other presentations on the agenda include:
- 鈥淢y Journey Through STEM as an Indigenous Biologist鈥� by Leilani Sablan, Sea Turtle Biologist with UOG Sea Grant
- 鈥淰olunteers and Citizen Science in Guam鈥� by Olympia Terral, Science Communicator for UOG Sea Grant and Center for Island Sustainability
- "Bee Keeping in Guam" by Christopher Rosario
- "Elevating our Environmental Opportunities" by Kyle Dahilig
- "91快播 Drone Corps" by Keanno Fausto
Register to attend the conference at www.uog.edu/cnas/stem-con/. Early bird registration rates are available until March 31.
After March 31, registration will be $30 for all attendees.
